Plant of the Month – Rhododendron

May is the month when rhododendrons really steal the show. These bold, beautiful shrubs burst into bloom with clusters of vibrant flowers in shades of pink, purple, red, white, and even yellow. Whether you have a large garden or a smaller space, there’s a rhododendron to suit – from towering varieties that make a statement to compact types perfect for pots and borders.

Why Rhododendrons?

  • Big, Showy Blooms – Nothing says spring quite like the spectacular flowers of a rhododendron.
  • Evergreen Foliage – Most varieties keep their leaves all year, adding structure to the garden even in winter.
  • Great for Pollinators – Bees love the nectar-rich blooms.
  • Thrives in Acidic Soil – Perfect for gardens with ericaceous (acidic) soil or pots with the right compost.
  • Variety of Sizes – From dwarf types ideal for containers to large shrubs that create impact.

Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Prefers dappled shade but some varieties can handle more sun if the soil stays moist.
  • Soil: Needs acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. If your soil is alkaline, grow in pots with ericaceous compost.
  • Care: Water well in dry spells and remove faded flowers to encourage more growth. No heavy pruning needed – just a tidy-up if required.

Where to Plant

  • Feature Shrub – A mature rhododendron in full bloom is a real garden showpiece.
  • Woodland-Style Borders – Works beautifully alongside ferns, azaleas, and camellias.
  • Containers – Smaller varieties thrive in pots with the right compost, making them great for patios.
  • Wildlife Gardens – Provides an early source of nectar for bees and other pollinators.

A Classic Spring Favourite

If you’re after a striking, low-maintenance shrub that brings colour year after year, rhododendrons are hard to beat. They’re tough, reliable, and put on an incredible display every spring.
